What is Firestopping, and How is it Used?
What is Firestopping?
Firestopping is a fire protection system made of various components, and it is utilized in the sealing of joints and openings in fire-resistant rated walls or floor assemblies. The practice of sealing these joints, can be used anywhere that a roof meets a wall structure. Firestopping contains a fire within an area to stop it from traveling from one portion of the building to another. It’s not stopping the fire system, but rather compartmentalizing areas where plumbing goes through walls, and other lines that are penetrations for smoke. Those are locations that fire stopping is required at.
Where is Firestopping Used?
Though a growing part of the construction industry, firestopping is relatively new to the field and was born and generated from devastating and fatal fires. The construction industry learned that they need to do things differently, and technology and products have been developed to contain these fires. The practice is becoming more and more popular in metropolitan areas, and areas where fire could travel multiple stories, in buildings or hotels. Firestopping is not just practiced in the United States but in international construction as well. You can travel all over the world and see information about Firestopping in Dubai or Canada and any multi-story structures where people are housed.
